Novel ultracapacitors as a game-changer for electric vehicle adoption and energy storage solutions.

Electric vehicles are an important part of meeting global goals on climate change, but despite car makers’ efforts to promote them, the electric vehicle market is still taking off slowly. Decreasing the cost of energy storage and solving the charging constraints are expected to accelerate electric vehicle uptake. However, these goals cannot be met by batteries alone. The EU-funded X-CAP project is proposing an alternative solution based on ultracapacitors, which in certain applications could replace batteries, while in others they could act as a supplementary technology. The project will apply a novel material in ultracapacitor cells to increase power density and storage capacity beyond the theoretical limits of classical ultracapacitors.
