RISEUP

Implantable technology for spinal cord injury treatment using electric pulses.

Nearly half a million people are diagnosed with spinal cord injury (SCI) every year. The limited capacity for axonal regrowth coupled with a non-permissive environment lead to paralysis. To regenerate neuronal function after SCI, the EU-funded RISEUP project will develop an electrified, biocompatible and biodegradable implantable technology, that introduces wireless controlled electric pulses to stimulate transplanted neural stem cells and multipotent stromal cells. The electric pulses facilitate cell maturation and neuronal activity, triggering the re-connection of endogenous neurons. The long-term vision of RISEUP is to provide an innovative SCI treatment that will improve the quality of life of patients.
