Space debris, consisting of more than 13,000 tonnes of defunct satellites, rocket stages, and fragmented components, presents an escalating risk to critical services such as satellite communications, Earth observation, and space navigation. Addressing this pressing issue, an expert panel titled “Tackling the Space Debris Challenges” has been organised by Stella Tkatchova, EIC Programme Manager for Space systems & technologies, and will convene on 9 April 2025 from 09:30 to 11:00 CET.

The session will highlight disruptive technological innovations designed to mitigate and remove debris, explore economic and market-driven incentives, and discuss cutting-edge developments in satellite servicing and in-space recycling technologies. With increasing commercial interest and private sector participation in space activities, the panel aims to identify the crucial roles emerging markets and private investments play in ensuring sustainable and secure use of outer space.

Confirmed panelists include:

  • Stefano Antonetti, Vice President of Business Development at D-Orbit, a company recognised for pioneering solutions in orbital transportation and satellite lifecycle management.
  • Christine Leurquin, from Aldoria, a company engaged in developing innovative approaches for sustainable space activities and debris mitigation.
  • Hira Virdee, CEO of Lumi Space, known for its efforts in satellite servicing and active debris removal technologies.
  • Dr Gonzalo Sanchez Arriaga, Associate Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, an expert on space debris dynamics and removal methodologies.

This event promises an insightful exploration into the latest research and practical strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of space operations.
