PUSHING THE LIMITS OF LARGE-SCALE ENERGY STORAGE: Optimised Combined Cycle CAES (PUSH-CCC) is an EIC Pathfinder Challenge project addressing one of the most pressing needs of the energy transition: reliable, long-duration energy storage. The project aims to transform compressed air energy storage (CAES) from one of the least mature large-scale storage technologies into a viable, high-impact solution for global decarbonisation.

This session will introduce the core concept behind PUSH-CCC and present the latest breakthroughs achieved through the project’s research. It will also outline the team’s long-term vision for the technology within the rapidly evolving landscape of medium- to long-duration energy storage systems (MLDES), including its upcoming validation at the La Gomera Experimental Plant, currently under construction in the Canary Islands (Spain).

Rather than focusing on technical details, the presentation will highlight the strategic advantages and real-world potential of PUSH-CCC, addressing an audience of policymakers, investors and potential industrial partners. It will explore how this technology could become a key enabler of Europe’s energy transition, helping to maximise the impact of investments under the European Green Deal and support the path towards a climate-neutral economy by 2050.
